Disposing Of Scrap Cars Safely

Posted by admin on February 19, 2012 at 2:09 pm. Filed under: Car Disposal

When an old car is ready for the scrap yard, some people would rather just abandon it or sell it to someone untrustworthy because they don’t know how to dispose of it properly and safely. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here at Vehicle Recycling Services we offer a free, quick, and easy service for helping you to dispose of your scrap car safely. This service is legal and fully licensed, and is the most environmentally friendly way available to deal with scrap cars.

Car scrappage with us involves a very easy process for you that will only take a few minutes of your time. The rest you can leave to us.
First you just need to fill in a simple form online. Then you can wait until we get back to you with a confirmation and a unique booking reference. If you prefer, you can also ring us to arrange for collection of your car instead of filling in the online form.

After that, we will come to you and collect your scrap cat at a place and time convenient to you. For instance, we can pick it up from you home, wherever you are storing it, or if you want to meet us somewhere with your car we can do that too.

Once we take your car we will deliver it to a licensed treatment facility for it to be scrapped safely. We will then notify the DLVA that your car has been scrapped and then send you a certificate of destruction.

Checks to make before scrap car disposal

Most people think carefully before making a decision when it comes to car scrappage, and once it has been made and a reputable and fully legal scrapper has been engaged to pick the vehicle up, there isn’t much more to worry about except a little paperwork, and we can help with that. However, it’s always work making a few last minute checks to make sure nothing gets left behind in the car. Before we (or another scrap car disposal company) arrive, take one last look through the car including all the following places:

-The glovebox. Many motorists keep important papers in the glovebox, and you may need these even after the scrap car has been taken away, so it pays to go through everything left in the glovebox carefully. If in doubt over the value of an official document, keep it!

-Under the seats. Often, small items like toys roll off the back seat and end up under the front ones. It’s always worth running a hand under the seats to check for hidden personal possessions.

-The windscreen. Some cars have badges from roadside assistance services like the AA or the RAC on the windscreen, or display a local council resident parking permit. You may need these for your next vehicle.

-The boot, including the spare tyre well. There is no reason you can’t keep tools like the jack and tyre iron and either sell them on, give them to a friend or family member, or put them in another car. Do remember that a jack that worked perfectly for a small hatchback might not suit a big 4×4 though.

Some car scrappage statistics

Posted by admin on January 16, 2012 at 2:12 pm. Filed under: Car Scrappage

Precise figures are hard to come by but some interesting car scrappage statistics were just published in the USA. It seems that our cousins on the other side of the Atlantic recycle about 10 million cars each year- if we estimate the weight of the average car at one and a half metric tonnes that means 15 million tons of material, about 75% of which is recyclable. So far, so good.

In the USA alone 11 million tonnes of steel are extracted from car scrap each year. That means 11 million tonnes of steel that doesn’t require the mining of new iron and doesn’t need to be smelted into an alloy. You can easily imagine the environmental benefits there.

Getting metal out of scrap cars rather than out of the ground saves 10 million barrels of oil every year- and that’s just in the United States, remember. The global figure would be much higher. Not only does that reduce the demand for new oil exploration and the impact of exploiting existing sources, it also means less carbon and other nasty gases released into the atmosphere.

275 million tyres are recycled in the USA each year. They don’t just sit around in piles. The rubber from old tyres gets turned into playground surfaces for schools and parks. It’s used to build sports fields, roads, and city pavements.

Those statistics are pretty impressive and although they’re only for the US they still show just how important proper scrappage is. The environmental benefits are enormous and so is the economic value.

Good reasons to scrap a car promptly

Posted by admin on January 2, 2012 at 2:11 pm. Filed under: Car Scrappage

There are plenty of reasons to get scrap car disposal arranged promptly. First off, there’s the paperwork. Owning a car that is not currently under MOT, insured, or not properly taxed can mean serious penalties including fines and licence points. You can always fill out the necessary paperwork and declare it off the road, but that means extra paperwork for no real reason. If the car isn’t going to be used again it might as well be scrapped immediately.

Then there is ease of disposal. A scrap car that still runs but can’t be driven shouldn’t just be left alone. After a month or too it may not be so easy to move, and may not even start at all so scrappers won’t be able to take it away so simply. If possible it’s best to call us in while the car still runs- it’s not necessarily a requirement, but it does make the job quicker and smoother. We don’t mind picking up cars that don’t run but make sure you let us know if that’s the case.

Thirdly, there’s the simple fact that scrap cars are pretty unsightly. Although we do love scrap vehicles of all kinds, even the most devoted scrapper can’t say that they’re attractive to look at. They also take up space that could be put to better use as parking for another car or just a clear entryway.

Of course, there are other reasons to get old cars removed, but there are very few good reasons to delay scrappage if a car won’t be driven again. We’ll make the process quick and as convenient for you as possible, so don’t put it off.

Legal Scrap Car Disposal – Best for the Environment, Best for You

Posted by admin on December 12, 2011 at 11:26 am. Filed under: Car Disposal
If your car's been involved in an accident, has failed its MOT or is simply too old to be road worthy, you're probably thinking about the process of car scrappage. It's essential you go about it the right way if you want to be confident you’re following all necessary legal requirements, and with our help you’ll find it’s better for the environment as well as being best for you.

Legal scrap car disposal all comes down to having the necessary paperwork and following all government legislation – your car needs to be scrapped at a recognised and licenced Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) and you’ll also need an official certificate of destruction from the DVLA to ensure your car has been legally disposed of. This certificate is a vital part of the process – if you don’t have it you’ll still be seen as the recognised owner and it could lead to a range of unnecessary issues, so always make sure you have this record and you can have the peace of mind that you need.

When you come to us we’ll be able to take care of all necessary paperwork for you, giving you a hassle-free solution to your needs whilst ensuring your scrap car is being disposed of legally and safely. Plus, we always endeavour to recycle as much of the vehicle as we can so you can be confident that you’re doing your bit for the environment at the same time, so if you want a solution that’s best for the environment as well as best for you make sure to get in touch and we’ll take care of everything.

Don’t Get Caught Out by Illegal Car Scrappage Companies

Posted by admin on December 1, 2011 at 11:26 am. Filed under: Car Scrappage
If you're looking to arrange scrap car disposal then it's essential you're able to go about it legally and safely. You need to follow all necessary government legislation if you don't want to suffer the consequences later down the line, and so finding a reliable company should be at the top of the agenda. However, there are some unscrupulous car scrappage companies out there that will take your car off your hands without following regulations, so make sure you’re not caught out by choosing reputable companies instead.

These illegal scrappage teams will often be difficult to locate, but if they try to give you money for your vehicle (or, conversely, if they ask for money as part of the service) then alarm bells should start ringing. All reputable companies will operate completely free of charge and won’t pay you for your vehicle either, and those that do will often try to sell on your car for profit. This will not only endanger other people’s lives but without being given the official certificate of destruction you’ll also be at risk of liability, so never accept payment for scrap cars if you want to be confident in the legality of the process.

It’s also essential to check that the company will be using an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) and that they’ll be able to provide all necessary paperwork, and if you want to be certain you’re making the right decision then make sure to get in touch. We’re a registered and approved scrappage company and always operate according to strict government guidelines, so don’t get caught out and come to us instead for total peace of mind.

Scrapping a Non-Runner

Posted by admin on November 29, 2011 at 2:20 pm. Filed under: Car Scrappage

If your car isn’t running anymore, it’s stuck or it has broken down, we can still deal with it for you. Just fill in the form as normal, and we’ll call you to confirm the details, including where your car has become stuck and how best to get to it! After that’s arranged, we can send around a proper recovery vehicle to pick up your car safely and easily wherever it’s broken down. It’s much safer and less stressful than trying to get it back yourself, particularly if you’re only going to scrap it once it gets home! As long as you let us know with plenty of time in advance, we can pick up cars with all sorts of problems, including damaged axles, worn-out engines and even missing wheels!

However, be warned that if you don’t let us know with plenty of time to get the recovery vehicles warmed up, there will be an additional fee if we don’t managed to collect your car. Our failed collection fee is unfortunately necessary; it covers us against time wasted when we drive out to pick up scrap cars that we can’t get access to. The best bet is to call us if you’ve got any queries about a car to scrap. Call, email, or go online if you’ve got any questions, or to warn us about anything you think we’ll need to know before we set off, like low bridges or red routes.

Trust Us to Scrap Your Car

Posted by admin on November 15, 2011 at 2:20 pm. Filed under: Car Scrappage

It’s important to be careful if you’re looking for someone to scrap a car; unfortunately there are plenty of rogue firms out there who offer car scrappage for cash. Steer clear of any company who offers you cash, or who won’t offer you a proper DVLA certificate for scrappage. Companies who don’t offer you the certificate are probably not going to scrap your car at all; they might sell it on for a profit or even use it to carry out a crime… suffice to say rogue traders in car scrappage could get you into serious trouble, as you’ll still be the legal owner of the car without knowing where it is or what it’s doing! So how do you know we’re different?

Firstly, once we’ve taken your car for scrappage to a licensed ATF, we’ll forward you a certificate of destruction from the DVLA. That’s a proper legal document, and it’s there to prove that your car has been taken off the road permanently. It’s a sad day for a car you’ve loved, but nice to know that everything’s gone on above board. Not only that, but the certificate also confirms that the car was properly disposed of, including showing that we followed all the right recycling and environmental legislation. Sound good so far?

So who can I trust to scrap my car? Go to a trader like Scrap Cars UK who’ll get rid of your car for free for you.
